My Second Home on Hill 1157 581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
10. My Second Home on Hill 1157

My dugout was a temporary living quarters for me. One day I went into the nearby town and hired a contractor and his crew to build me a house. This is it. It cost me 90,000 Won to build and it was worth every penny. 90,000 won is $15 US. The contractor was extremely happy to get the work and I was happy to get the house. The walls are wood saplings bound together with wire. Poles make up the roof. They put a straw thatched roof and I had them put canvas over that to insure no rain came in. The walls were then plastered with mud and then papered inside.

The floor was made of very large rocks placed so there was hollow spaces the entire length and then plastered with clay mud on top. In the front of the house was a fireplace and at the back was chimney made from mortar casings. You lit a fire in the fireplace and the heat would pass through the house floor and out the chimney. That way the floor was toasty warm. The floor was finally plastered with paper and then covered with woven rice mats. This caused the Inevitable jealousy, especially for the officers so eventually I had to build some for them also, which I sold to them for a profit. The contractor was excited to get such business.
