581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
11. The Walk to the Top of Hill 1157 Here I am walking up the hill carrying my rifle. The Signal Corps issues M2 Carbines to its soldiers. Most of us didn't think too much of this weapon. It is rather light and has a bullet about an inch long. Most of us packed away their carbines. You have to be able to give back the weapon with the correct serial number when you leave Korea. We then managed to get a M1 rifle, like the ones the infantry uses. It has a bullet about 3 inches long, is much more accurate and packs a much bigger punch. I will have to admit while I am walking up by myself a young lady who worked in the kitchen is carrying my 90-pound pack. She would wait for me when I fell behind. She took the picture of me. After about 12 trips up the hill I did much better and it took much less time. It was nice however to have a good path to the top. The M2 carbine will fire automatic or by lever semiautomatic. It has a magazine of 30 rounds. The M1 rifle has a clip of 8 rounds. Hi-Res Pic (122K) ⇦ Back to Scene 10 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 12 ⇨ |
