Me in Front of Our New Quonset Hut 581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
20. Noll in Front of Our New Quonset Hut

After the road was completed the engineers began construction on a Quonset hut for us. It became our mess hall, dining room and recreation room. It was nice to have a warm comfortable place to relax and eat. The station personnel invested in some nice china and some silverware for our meals. It may look like something crude to you but it was the best thing that had happened to us in a long while. The Army was looking out for us. Not only did we get a Quonset hut but a prefab shack for our station. The road up to the top, while crude by US standards meant no more 10-mile 4-hour walk to the top.

This station was on the army's long-term plans and the moving every couple of weeks might be over. I was to spend the rest of my time in Korea here. I was tired and the staying in one spot appealed to me. We had cooks, Korean laundry ladies, Korean KP workers, and others. It was very nice. This was your dollars hard at work. All of this for $120 dollars a month. We never had it so good.    Hi-Res Pic (186K)
