581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
12. The First Radio Hut on Hill 1157 This is the first radio shack on Hill 1157. It is a dugout in the ground with poles covered with canvas for the roof. The door is the door off of the downed helicopter that was lying nearby. It is warm and comfortable. A little difficult to get into but it got us on the air and out of the weather. This relay station turned out to be extremely important one because this mountain is the highest in South Korea. Because of this we had eventually four through links. Each link has, for example, a receiver facing south. That signal is then in turn fed to a transmitter that faces north. Then from the north there is another receiver that is fed to a transmitter facing south. Thus each link has two transmitters and two receivers. Four links then had 8 transmitters and 8 receivers with 16 antennas. To power all of this we had to use four power generators, each of which must be changed every two hours, 24 hours a day, every day. They call you only when there are troubles with the signal otherwise you stay off the mike yourself. Hi-Res Pic (126K) ⇦ Back to Scene 11 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 13 ⇨ |
