581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
24. Part of the Road Up to Hill 1157 This is a part of the new road. Very steep and treacherous at spots. One day our company sent us a large power unit. The small 2500-watt single-cylinder units can only run for 2 hours without changing. This unit was 10,000 watts and could run for 4-6 hours. It would be a big improvement for us and was eagerly anticipated by everyone. It was mounted on a trailer. A young man was assigned (not me) to tow it up to the top of the hill. He was driving a 2 1/2 ton truck pulling this trailer. He lost traction on a steep part of the hill and had to stop. He could not get started moving again because the wheels were spinning. He unhooked the trailer after blocking the wheels of the trailer and started forward. The truck stalled, slipped back and then the truck gave the trailer a slight tap. The last he saw of the trailer power unit was when it was airborne going over a cliff. It was a total loss. The leaders came down hard on him and broke him in rank back to a private. Everyone was sorry for him and sad to lose the power unit. Hi-Res Pic (109K) ⇦ Back to Scene 23 Return to Page 3 On to Scene 25 ⇨ |
