581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
22. Part of the Road Up to Hill 1157 After we had been on the hill for some time the engineers arrived to make a road up to the top of Hill 1157. They showed up with some bulldozers and after a few days of looking they began. They carved out a road that was one to behold. It had a few blind turns where they started to go and then changed courses. They lost one bulldozer in the effort and two men were killed. They are a part of those who gave their lives for their country. The Engineers enlisted the effort of thousands of Korean laborers to crush rock for the soggy parts of the road but finally completed the road. It took nerves of steel to drive this road. Our trucks needed six-wheel drive in compound low to make it. Every 30 days we got new tires for the truck and in about 60 days they replaced the engines. I never felt too comfortable driving on parts of the road. Most every day the Korean laborers would try to improve the road with more rock and some additional ditching.
