Hill 775 Base Camp 581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 775 - South Korea (1951)
2. Hill 775 Base Camp

Here Cpl. Dunkle, Cresiconi and Campbell take a break from the job of setting up the base camp. Each time we set up a radio station, a large crowd appears to watch the excitement. Women, men and children come to watch. Part of the reason to come besides the just plain interest is that they know a signal unit always needs workers to do some of the work. We are just a small unit and we have about eight tons of equipment to set up. So some are looking for work and we always hire some for jobs such as kitchen help, laborers to carry things, etc.

The military gives us money to hire people. Not a lot by US standards but a lot by their standards. Workers get 1,000 won a day for work and they are happy to get the work. It always was distressing to me when some idiot officer would complain that we were out of uniform. Our officers never did but some visiting jerks would do so. The temperature at this time of year is close to 100 F.      Hi-Res Pic (143K)
