My Enlistment Letter Paul Noll Joins the US Army
8. My Enlistment Letter

I had applied for attendance to the Signal School. This letter guaranteed me that I could go to the school upon completion of Basic Training. The letter reads in part as, "Your application for attendance at an Army School in the event of your enlistment has been received and reviewed. You are hereby notified of your authorization to attend the Radio Operator High-Speed Manual course at the Signal Corps Training Center, Camp Gordon, GA, commencing 30 May 1949, if you are enlisted and after your basic training." The problem was that I can't hear in my left ear and couldn't pass a simple Morse code test. While most soldiers signed up for classes of the shortest duration, (stock clerk was only 4 days) I want classes that were the longest and most useful in the outside world. So the Army who would have had to let me go or let me sign up for Radio Repair (56 Weeks). We were both happy. My first assignment was to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, California. I took basic training there.
