My Mess Card for the 44th Signal Company Paul Noll Joins the US Army
26. My Mess Card for the 44th Signal Company

After my Christmas Leave extended for 30 days, and I went back to Fort Ord, I was assigned to Camp Cooke near Santa Maria California. It is now the Vandenberg Air Force Base. The 40th California National Guard Division had been there and had gone off the Korea. Soon after I arrived at Camp Cooke the Illinois 44th National Guard Division arrived for training so they could go to Korea. National Guard Divisions then were notorious for having little training suitable to go into combat. The Regular Army troops like myself were given a choice of taking Basic Training or giving Basic Training to the Guard troops. It is better to give than receive so I "volunteered." I chose to give classes on "Hasty Fortifications" and "Geneva Rules of Warfare." After a while Korean Veterans who were extended were honorably discharged. Four hours after they told me I could get out I was on the road out of camp to hitchhike home. A nice man gave me a ride all the way to the front door of my house.
