Richmond Relay - 1969-70
6. 7th Infantry Division at Camp Ames
Camp Ames was a small 7th Infantry Division base about 10 mi. northeast of Taejon. There was a landing field for helicopters and small planes, barracks, administrative operations and medical facilities. It was surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers but generally a quiet base. Outside the main gate was a Village where the soldiers would recreate by dancing, drinking and various ways of letting go. There was no such area in Taejon for the small detachment of GI's to do the same kind of things done in the Village so many of the Stonestown guys went to Camp Ames to party. That's not to say there wasn't plenty of good times to be found in Taejon its just that it was not a Village but was a normal Korean city. Some districts of Taejon were off-limits to GI's but there wasn't many MP's to enforce the regulations including the curfew hours. ⇦ Back to Page 5 Return to Page 1 On to Page 7 ⇨ |
