Richmond Relay - 1969-70
13. Road to Richmond Site and Beacon Site
Richmond Site was located S.E. of town on a mountain top and used to be called Taejon Relay. Prior to being operated by my signal command STRATCOM it was manned by the 8th Army Signal Long-Lines. The road up to the site from the MSR was about 8mi but took close to an hour to drive. It was a 4 wheel drive vehicle only road and was always icy, snow covered, muddy, bumpy and nearly impassable most of the time and impassable at times. It was April '69 and the road was steep, icy and narrow as the water truck and the "Newbie" made their way up the mountain. The truck nearly went over the edge several times and I was ready to jump out if the truck began to roll. The water in the tank sloshed around causing the real of the truck to slide left or right and the strain broke three tire chains on the way to the top of the mountain but we made it all in one piece. The water in the tank sloshed around causing the real of the truck to slide left or right and the strain broke three tire chains on the way to the top of the mountain but we made it all in one piece. Soon I too would be driving this dangerous and difficult road in all types of weather using many types of vehicles including jeeps, 3/4 ton, 1.5 ton and 2.5 ton trucks. The road was infamous and the soldiers on site who drove it were called the Richmond Road Runners. Many drivers would refuse to drive the road which kept the number of visitors to a minimum. ⇦ Back to Page 12 Return to Page 2 On to Page 14 ⇨ |
