Richmond Relay - 1969-70
15. Making our way up to Richmond Site
The road forked about 100 yards from the site gate and went on to the ROK relay site on the other side of the mountain top. At the junction was the air force arctic tent they used as a barracks. They had generators, heat, beds and a small day room in addition to the tropospheric scatter radio relay equipment they operated. It provided communications from Osan Air Base to Taegu A.B. I believe it was operated by the 2146th Comm. Group from Osan and the 1961st Comm. Group or 1st Mobile Comm. SQ. from Clark AFB in the Philippines. The air force NCOIC was named Carol St. Peter from Caribou, Maine and one of the greatest good guys I have ever met. There were 4-5 airmen at a time and they were TDY so only stayed about 3-4 months for their tour. Most of their time off was spent with us army guys in the Day Room or Mess Hall so we were all just radio brothers or "tube heads" and got along great. Some of the names given in fun by us were the "wing nuts" and "grunts" but some we only used among ourselves and can not be said here either. ⇦ Back to Page 14 Return to Page 2 On to Page 16 ⇨ |
