Richmond Relay - 1969-70
18. Richmond Site Dogs and Dayroom
One of the main stairways from the gate level went up to the Radio Operations building, main antenna tower and the Mess Hall building which were both Quonset huts. The other long stairway went to the AFKN broadcast tower and a second newer barracks constructed of block. This was my barracks and I shared it with Bill Lewis. He was proud to be part Indian and from Washington state. He liked to be crazy and we had a good time serving together. Later on he accidentally shot a Korean farmer and was sent to Tacoma were I was until leaving Country. Another stairway went from this main operation level up to the other buildings on site. Each of these was on a different level and cut into the mountain slope. The first was the Day Room on the left, then the old Barracks a few steps up on the right. A few more steps up the stairway on the left was the NCOIC (Site Chief) Residence. Above it was the old rock Laundry building and the water tank. From here you could see the ROK radio site a few 100 yards south of Richmond site. It was about 100 feet lower in elevation and relayed signals in different directions than our site so did not point in the same directions. The mountain top dropped off with a rock cliff on the east side. As far as I can determine Richmond Site is located east southeast of Taejon on Hill 3471. A water reservoir northeast of the site was a dominant geographical feature seen from the site but I do not recall its name. The Kum River was also visible in the distance beyond the reservoir.
