Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 19. Richmond Site Mess Hall in Winter

The Mess Hall was an old Quonset hut and was located above the helipad on a ridge. It had a 270 degree view of central South Korea and the Kum River. It was run by 2 Korean Civil Service cooks and 2 helpers. They would work a rotating shift and stay a few days at a time on site. I remember Jack the cook and Mr. Nam and a Mr. Cha. The kitchen was open 24 hrs a day for snacks but there were set times for meals. We selected from a daily menu and usually had a choice from 3 main dishes at each meal. We really ate well!

I enjoyed getting a fresh cup of coffee about sunrise while on the midnight to 0800 radio shift then returning when off duty for a big custom country style breakfast. The Mess Hall had a screened in porch to dine in during the hot summers and a barbeque grill outside for cooking.

We had some nice parties there and I ate a lot of steaks although I wondered where they came from but I never questioned a gift house in the mouth. Especially one you could eat or drink!

Many poker games took place in the Mess Hall. The cooks and various site personnel enjoyed attending the card games that sometime went on until early morning. The building was also anchored to the ground with large cables to prevent it from blowing off the mountain as it had in the past due to the high winds at that elevation. I have seen big metal sheets from the Quonset hut roofs bend or blow off buildings in the strong winds. The parabolic disc antennas would fly in the air and cut into tree trunks before being stopped by the dense vegetation outside the site perimeter.
