Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 26. Off Duty at Richmond Site

Only one stairway continued up the side of the mountain from the radio operations building. About 15 steps up and on the left was the Day Room. It was the most active spot on site. We used to count the steps between buildings and remember them so we could navigate the walkways during snow storms and white out conditions. It was easy to slip or even be blown off the mountain during these times and end up caught in the barbed wire perimeter fence. Some guys almost froze to death before we found them but some had so much anti freeze in them they lasted for hours.

We had a pool table and ping pong table in the Day Room. It also had our bar, movie screen, games, tables, furniture and our barber chair. We played all types of cards, darts, and dice and found other ways to keep ourselves and each other entertained. Table Tennis was a big sport and recreation in Korea. There were gyms everywhere in town where people of all ages played Table Tennis like Americans went to bowling allays. On our days off we wore civvy (civilian) clothes around the site and liked to wear something that was from the home area or state.

There were some mighty big parties held in that Quonset hut and it even became our shelter during times of powerful storms. Sometime we would get snowed in on the mountain for days at a time and would run out of fresh food. We would have to eat rations heated on the diesel stores that also provided our only heat. I remember a time when we made a big pot of soup from everything we had left in the kitchen. It contained potatoes, carrots, onions, Ramon noodle soup and bits and pieces of anything else we could scrounge. At the door was a bucket of ice and any liquor remaining in anyone's stash would be put into it as a contribution for all to enjoy and share. Maybe we added some juice or cough syrup to the mixture if the combination was too bad but usually we just imbibed it the way it came out of the bucket.
