Richmond Relay - 1969-70
27. Richmond Radio Relay Site - 1969
The previous signalers had built a large panoramic movie screen so we enjoyed movies while eating popcorn and drinking from our bar. Well drinks were .15$ and beers .10$. We put all our ration cards together each month to purchase the rationed liquor and any extra profit went to paying the house boys, laundry girl, barber and additional labors when needed. It also paid for many parties and bar-BQ for all site personnel. There were guys on site who knew the ropes from having been in country and learned them from the previous guys. We relied on these site veterans to show and tell us how things were done in the past and to pass the stories and tales along to us. Traditions were made from these stories that future signalmen would follow as we did from those before us. A few stair steps above the Mess Hall and on the right side of the stairway up slope were the old Barracks. It was a Quonset hut and had 4-5 rooms in it. Some of the guy's names that I remember are Dennis Sharp, Jim Resell, Darrel Hodge Jr., Robert Vancil and Gary Garter. There were other ones that came earlier or later in my tour and I do not recall their names. I am sorry but I can at least picture them in my mind and they are part of a cherished memory that I share with you now. Higher up on the slope above the Day Room was the NCOIC's Barracks. It was made of block, had its own living room and was occupied only by the Site Chief. The last building was the Laundry Room. It was small, made of rock and the oldest structure on site I believe. The water tank was on the highest point on the mountain above the laundry room. Behind it was a short antenna tower that AFKN used for their microwave system shooting south and west.
