Richmond Relay - 1969-70
42, Microwave and Tropo Antenna
While I was at Hialeah Compound in Pusan I came close to getting busted. I heard from a friend that I got my promotion to Sp5 so some of the students who were my friends and already Sp5's decided to go for drink at the NCO club to celebrate. I had not received my official papers yet but thought everything would be fine and good with the Army. While we were in the NCO club having a drink the company's Top Sergeant came over to me and said that I was lucky that he didn't give me an Article 15 for being in the club and only a Sp4. I was use to drinking, eating, partying and more all together on an isolated radio site. Having separate and unequal services or facilities was foreign to me. It was only Lady Luck that saved my butt that day as the Top had seen the promotion list cross his desk that very day and it had my name on it. That was a close call for my future Good Conduct Medal. After one week and the graduation of the first class I was replaced by a real instructor from Fort Monmouth. I did not feel bad about the replacement as I knew that I had done a good job with the resources I had and was also getting tired. It was a lot of work and responsibility. I was glad to know that the school was established and with my help but I was ready to go back to my quiet little radio relay site on the hill. I also wonder how long the school lasted and if anything ever became of it. |
