Tacoma Relay Station Tacoma Relay - 1969-70 60. Tacoma Site Happy Hour

Small matters like the sheets make a big difference in personnel morale. I believed that knowing you will support them makes the troops support their leader. I had problems getting our site mail, water, tires, bread, movies and various supplies and material. This turned out to be the type of daily work for an assistant site chief and just S.O.P. or Standard Operating Procedures while working on an isolated site.

I started a training program on site that gave weekly safety sessions to the guys. I also had a monthly radio and systems class for cross training and individual development.

I kept all site records and spent much of my time organizing and keeping the radio shop stock inventory according to the way the Army wanted it done. I would get it all organized according to one protocol then the procedures would be changed to a different system and I would have to re-do it all over again. Just S.O.P. for the Army but it drove me crazy.

Each barracks had a small den or room to set in. We used the one in the E.M. barracks as our TV and movie room but the one in the NCO barracks was our bar. We would get together for drinks in the evening before showing the flick or movie. If all went right with the mail we would have about 5 movies a week that we picked up at the base theater at Kunsan AB. Site Chief SCF Roland Diaz, Bobby L. Cole, Quentin McElwee and I, Ric Obrey enjoyed using up our rations of alcohol in our site bar but Bill Bookeloo and Paul Booker also would let us use their ration because they did not drink.    On to Hi-Res Pic (121K)
