Tacoma Relay Station Tacoma Relay - 1969-70 59. Terraced Rice Fields below Tacoma Site

I kept busy on Tacoma Site 10 and did not get off the mountain much for recreation. My time was taken up trying to get the Air Force supply to give us new or clean sheets and other important matters. In the summer we would sweat in the humid environment and would need to exchange our linens at Air Force supply more frequently and it caused a problem. One time we went 3 days with the same mildewed sheets before I could get them exchanged (oh what a hardship tour). Small items and issues made a difference and mattered to the guys so I worked hard to do what they needed or wanted.

The mountain tops were covered with a short pine forest too small for timber. The slopes with the remaining trees were being transformed into farmland as the terraces encroached. Food was needed to support a growing population and the forest would never be what they were before Would War II when the Japanese occupation stripped Korea of its countries resources including the trees. The only tall trees left on the countryside were around the temples. Underneath the radio site on the south side was a small old mine and portal. The Koreans said that they did not know much about the mine and I do not recall the type of ore but the cave had been used in the past as a place to make alcohol.
