Richmond Relay - 1969-70
69. Richmond Relay Station
In April 1966 the 1st Signal Brigade was formed in Viet Nam under the command of STRATCOM - Pacific to help mitigate radio and signal traffic problems resulting from high user ship and blurring lines of communications between tactical and strategical communications. At its peak in 1968 the brigade had more than 16,000 soldiers in its ranks, commanded 6 Signal Groups, 22 Signal Battalions and a large number of specialty agencies. This made it, at the time, the largest brigade in the U.S. Army and combatant signal element ever. By Nov.'72 due to reduction in forces in Viet Nam the troop numbers in the 1st Signal Brigade had been reduced to less than 1,300 soldiers. STRATCOM headquarters was also moved to Fort Huachuca, AZ. in 1967. In Nov. 1972, the 1st Signal Brigade's colors were transferred from Viet Nam to the Republic of South Korea (ROK) under the command of its mother unit STRATCOM. Another re-organization of signal units took place in July '74 resulting in the 36th Signal Battalion of the 1st Signal Brigade replacing my old signal unit Long- Lines Battalion- South HQ in Taegue and the 41st Signal Battalion replaced Long- Lines Battalion-North HQ in Seoul. Other changes occurred at this time too such as my Company "C" was replaced by the 501st Signal Company, 1st Signal Brigade and still operate may of the same radio relay sites I served on with STRATCOM which now is named Netcom / 9th SC(A).
