Joseph E. Sioui - 1957 Korea
1. Two Privates
Privates Edwards and Sioui outside our "Condo" one of two structures for the
troops, Edwards was assigned to the motor pool.
When we arrived Company D Long Lines Sig. Battalion in Seoul just after being
in Seoul and shipped to Pusan and back to Seoul for our assignments we were
there in a group formation and the first Sgt. comes along and wants to know who
the Power maintenance man was, that was me and I wondered what in hell did I do
or where am I am going now, he had me fall out and follow him to the mess hall
where I was treated to the best pizza in weeks, made by Korean cooks and served
by Korean waiters, I could not believe the meal and the service. Upon finishing
my meal I was taken to the power shack where the Sgt. in charge had all sorts
of documents for me to sign as he was leaving the next morning and that meant I
was in charge.
I had one GI, two ROK soldiers and one civilian employee at my disposal, it was
overwhelming to say the least. I learned the business in a hurry, I had no
choice the Sgt. was gone. I was now the NCOIC, a Private just out of Fort
Gordon with no experience is going to run this operation.
I left there under the same conditions as I left on an emergency leave, so I
have no idea who took my place. I left Korea as a Spec. 3. My first Sgt. told
me that he was going to put me in for Sgt. but just about the time that I
left.
