28. Map Showing NKPA Tank Fight
While the 124th CCF Division had withdrawn to the north of Chinhung-ni, they left the remnants of the 344th NKPA Tank Regiment to fend for themselves. This NKPA (North Korean People's Army) Unit had been reduced in the battle of Seoul from its original size of three armored and three infantry companies to just five tanks. On tank had made a single handed attack on the 7th, and after being damaged, had been abandoned the next day. Until the Marine Engineers widened the road through the Funchilin Pass the 344th could not escape. The railroad passes to the west of the river while the road is on the east. At the highway entrance to the town Marines unknowingly passed the first T-34 hidden on the right of the road. Quickly shouting for the .75s and the rockets and the first tank was finished in minutes. Then they spotted the second tank under a pile of brush about 50 yards beyond the first. Two Marines climbed on the tank, smashed the periscope and dropped two grenades in the tank. Smoke and fire belched from the gun ports and the periscope. The third tank was hidden in a thatched hut about 75 yards farther down the road. It smashed through it camouflage and swung toward the advancing Marines, its 85mm cannon starting to traverse. A corsair on station blew the tank with two five-inch rockets. The fourth tank was just beyond the hut and tight against the hillside. Recoilless rifles put it out of action, and the crew surrendered. The 344th Tank Regiment of the North Korean People's Army ceased to exist. ⇦ Back to Page 27 Return to Sgt Smith - Page 4 On to Page 29 ⇨ |
