In this drop, we were shocked to find helmet liners, barbed wire, 50 cal. machine gun and 105mm howitzer ammo (Fox had neither). Also included were cases of 1903 Springfield stripper-clipped ammo for the pre-WWII rifles. This we reloaded into magazines for the BAR's and clips for the M1's. We did receive much belted ammo for the 30's as well as some 45's for the captured Thompsons and both 60 and 81mm mortar rounds plus grenades.

Moving these supplies to the lines was difficult with sniper fire. Sgt. Smith, the company supply Sgt., was hit in the leg during the recovery and put out of action. After dark, a detail of volunteers without weapons, moved silently from the 2nd platoon lines to recover more of the drop. With only the sound of snow under their feet, they moved from bundle to bundle getting all they could carry of the usable items and carrying much of that on recovered stretchers.

A second detail volunteered, including some of the first, and moved out to leave as little to the enemy as possible. The mission was successful and the ghostly silent figures moved exhausted back through the lines. They had drawn no fire.
