Epic of Fox Hill -- Page 13

Surrender!

Later that night, Fox Company was invited to surrender. A voice, proclaiming to be that of a Lieutenant of the 11th marines stated that we were surrounded (which we knew) and we would be given warm clothing and good treatment (which we doubted). Remaining on the road to our front and below the 8" cut, this gent and his captors were hidden from our view. We made no sound to give our position away. He got no takers.

Fox Company began to evaluate the situation at hand and make the most of it as we covered our positions with white quilted blankets taken from the hundreds of enemy dead. We were sure the enemy commander was unhappy at our not accepting his offer to surrender as a short time later an attempt was made to infiltrate our lines. With our positions covered with the white blankets and topped off with a light coat of falling snow, we watched almost without breathing. The ghostly white figures with weapons at the ready moved within 10 feet of our hole before we open fire. Hell broke loose again.
