The Chosin Reservoir in North Korea Communist Forces in Korea
4. The Chosin Reservoir in North Korea

An aerial scene of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. It was the area of the bitter fighting between the forces of Marshal Peng Dehuai and the Marine Division. Mao had announced to the Chinese people, "We have the Marines surrounded and we will kill them all". The brave fight by the Marines is chronicled in a book, "The March to Glory." Marshal Peng and Chairman Mao were so obsessed by this objective that 100,000 troops of the X Corps were able to evacuate Hungnam safely. My unit was providing radio communications to the Marines on the coast to the east and north of the Reservoir. Temperatures were 30 to 50 below zero. Wind chill factors of minus 120 degree F were recorded. I am still cold from those days. Many brave men froze in the cold. The cold did save some lives as the blood also froze and kept some from bleeding to death. In 1984 the Chinese offered me a job in Harbin, hundreds of miles north of here. I turned it down because of the cold.
