Mourning Dove Zenaidura macroura. At all seasons the commonest native dove in suburbs and farmlands. Flight is swift and direct, without coasting; the whistling of the wings is diagnostic. Nests singly, feeds in flocks. We saw one at the end of our driveway. Call, a low hhhooo-hooo-hoo-hooo. Because of its size it tends to bully the other birds. But the other birds seem to be patient and wait it out. |
