Xanthocephalus Xanthocephalus - Locally common to abundant in cattail and tule marshes. No other North American has yellow head and black body. White wing patch is lacking in females and first-year males. The brownish females are easily overlooked in large flocks of blackbirds. Song of low rasping notes ends in a long descending buzz. Call is a distinctive low hoarse croak.
