Mountain Quail Oreortyx pictus - This largest of North American quails is common in mountain regions in mixed woodlands and chaparral. The long, thin head plume is distinctive; the vertical white streaks on the flanks and the chestnut throat are good field marks. Sexes are similar, but the female is duller than the male. Typically hard to flush. Call, a loud crowing note, or a soft whook. |
