Bird Ecosystem
Deciduous forests, dominated by oak, hickory, beech, and elm, once covered most of the eastern United Sates and southern Canada. European settlers opened the forest and replaced it with cities, towns, and agricultural land. Remnants of the eastern deciduous forest remain extensive enough, however, to support diverse avifauna. Characteristic birds of this ecosystem include the Wild Turkey, the Red-bellied Woodpecker, the Black-capped Chickadee, the Blue Jay, and the Red-eyed Vireo. The Eastern Deciduous Forest is characterized by tall trees with broad spreading crowns, and open understory, and a forest floor of rich herbaceous growth. |
