116. My Second Car, a 1940 Chevy

While I was in New Jersey at Fort Monmouth in the army, my 1936 Chevrolet died when it threw a rod. I sold it and bought this car, a 1940 Chevrolet. I was smart enough to get a sedan so others could ride with me. On some weekends I would take other soldiers to their home and they would pay me. One weekend I went to Pittsburgh. PA, about 450 miles away. I took 4 soldiers and they paid me $200 for the ride. I had a good time in Pittsburgh, swimming, meeting girls and visiting. But the axle broke and it cost $50 to get it fixed. A very nice man fixed it on a Sunday and even fed me at his home while we worked on it. He got the part at a junk yard to repair the car. I got back about 2 hours before morning assembly with no sleep. Many times I would go to Asbury Park to the beach to meet girls. I met lots of them and had much fun at the beach.
