Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

Hoover Dam

11. Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

The four-lane Hoover Dam Bypass opened on October 19, 2010. It includes a composite steel and concrete arch bridge, the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, 1,500 ft (460 m) downstream from the dam. With the opening of the bypass, through traffic is no longer allowed across Hoover Dam, though dam visitors are allowed to use the existing roadway.

In late 2004, the proposed bridge name honoring Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman was announced at a ceremony by Nevada governor Kenny Guinn and Arizona governor Janet Napolitano. O'Callaghan, a decorated Korean War veteran, was governor of Nevada from 1971 - 1979 and was the executive editor at the Las Vegas Sun newspaper for many years until his death on March 5, 2004. Tillman was a football player for Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals who gave up his multi-million dollar career in the National Football League to enlist in the U.S. Army, and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.
