Tomcat Clover

Trifolium willdenowii - Locally common, early spring-midsummer, annual, 4-8 in. Prostrate or erect annual. Leaves on stems, stipules at base with bristles on upper edge. Leaflets 1/2 - 2 in., linear to egg-shaped. Flower head tiny to 1 in. wide, with many flowers except on smallest plants, supported by partly fused bracts with sharp tips. Flower pink-purple or deep red with white tip. Grows on soils heavy and wet in spring, sometimes with serpentine rock, below 5000 ft. Native.
