Highbush Cranberry (Mooseberry)

Viburnum edule - Locally common, early summer, perennial, 3-9 ft. Spreading to erect, deciduous shrub. Bark smooth, reddish, on young branches. Leaves opposite, shallowly 3-lobed, with sharp teeth, hairs on lower surface, turning brilliant red in autumn. Flowers in small clusters on short stems with single pair of small leaves. Flower white, 5 lobed. Fruit red to orange, berry-like, with large flat pits and acid juice. Grows with other shrubs in moist places at edges of forests and streams. Native.
