Hairy Honeysuckle

Lonicera hispidula - Common, midsummer, perennial, 3-10 ft. Vine, usually climbing, with many branches. Covered with hairs and glands to hairless. Leaves oval, with pointed tips, opposite, connected and wrapped around stem below the inflorescence. Inflorescence hairy with glands. Flower is 1 in. tube with flaring lobes, the upper lobe with 4 rounded teeth; interior yellow; exterior purplish red or pink, hairy with glands; stamens and style extending outward. Berries bright red. Grows on dry sites in open mixed woods, sometimes lying on the ground in clearings, at low to mid elevations. Native.
