Kinnickinnick (Bearberry)

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi - Common, all spring, perennial, trailing. Low creeping shrub, seldom more than 8 in. high. Stems reddish brown, older bark rough, new growth shedding, covered with matted hairs. Leaves spreading outward to upward, 1 in. long or less, oval, wider near rounded tips, with light green shiny undersides, darker green upper surfaces. Flowers pinkish white, bell-shaped, in small dense clusters. Berries are flattened globes, shiny bright red. Grows in dry rocky soils, outcrops, from coast to alpine. Native.
