581st Co. in South Korea (1950-51)
16. Look Mom, No Windshield This is the truck after the rescue. Except for no canvas top and a missing windshield it ran just fine. It is dangerous to drive without a windshield because sometimes bad people put ropes or wires across the road to catch your head; also you tend to get a lot of bugs in your teeth. The weather here now is warm. Korea has temps in the 100s in the summer and way below zero in the winter. On one trip in the winter every one else in the truck got into sleeping bags and left me to drive. With no cab and heater and the temp below zero and the wind-chill factor it gets bad. After a while I told everybody I couldn't feel my hands or feet and I needed some help. No one came out of their bags. I stopped at a deserted house and fired our machine gun at the house (it had incendiary rounds for antiaircraft use) until it caught fire and thawed my hands out so we could continue. No one else came out of their bags to see what was happening. I am still cold from that winter from Korea. Hi-Res Pic (106K) ⇦ Back to Scene 15 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 1 ⇨ |
