Back of My Mess Card for the USS Randall to Japan Paul Noll Joins the US Army
23. Back of My Mess Card for the USS Randall to Japan

This is the back of the USS Randall mess card for Paul Noll. Each soldier gets a card for his food. It identifies each soldier on the ship. If you look at this side of the card you can see its use. This back of the mess card indicates each soldier's lifeboat station in case of sinking and the compartment he is assigned to sleep. The compartments each have hundreds of soldiers with bunks 7 high back to back. Aisles are about 2 feet wide. Puke is covering the floor. It says, "No meals served without this card. Keep it with you. Do not throw anything on deck or mess tables." Every day the call went out over the loudspeaker and I can still hear it, "Whee Eee, Sweepers man your brooms, Sweep her down, Fore and Aft." They did punch your ticket for each meal. Meals were served standing up on tables shaped like a big pan. The pans were 3 foot by 6 foot with 4 inch sides. They were generally sloshing with spilled coffee and food. Never stand at the ends or you will get a dousing when the ship pitched too much.
