Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 30. Richmond Site Operations

Richmond Microwave and VHF Radio Relay Site started operations on a mountain near Taejon in the 1950's during the Korean War. The first identifying designator given to the site that I am aware of was Taejon Relay. There was also an Air Force radio site in the Taejon area but I do not know at this time if the two radio relay sites are related, near one another or actually the same site. This site was named Manila and had a designation as Chicken Relay by the air force. Its function was also to connect communications between Highpoint Site to the north of Taejon and Salem Site also called Nite Cap to the south near Taegue. Since Richmond Site carried out the same mission as Manila and also connected Kunsan Air Base on the west coast with these interior relay sites I do not know the relationship between the two sites.

Both the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Air Force Communications Groups established and operated various radio network links throughout North and South Korea during the war. Tracing individual communication units, sites and locations is difficult because of circumstances including; units becoming inactive and others being activated for service throughout the war period, commands are exchanged between companies, battalions and service branches and the closing and opening of new relay sites or system realignments.    Hi-Res Pic (225K)
