Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 53. Cooks Kids in Mess Hall after Movies

By far the most popular recreation was watching movies. We had them about 5 times a week but it depended on the mail and the film circuit. We also had the AFKN TV programming to watch or listen to the radio or someone's stereo system. We did not shoot pool or play ping pong as much as on Richmond Site nor did we play cards other than poker.

A few months after SCF Roland Diaz took over as Site Chief from SCF Summerville, who went to Bucket Site at Osan, he received word from company headquarters that the C.O. wanted to transfer me to another radio site. There was some type of problem at another site and the Company Commander picked me to take over command as he felt I could handle the situation.

He and I got into a jeep right away and headed off for base camp at Taejon. SFC Diaz did not want to loose me as his Assistant Site Chief and Radio Operations Sergeant. He was getting ready to retire and depended on me to keep the radios operating and the site running smoothly. He was my NCO mentor and I sure learned a lot from him but he was not a radio technician. He had served in the Korean War, Vietnam and many other assignments and did not want to have any problems this close to retiring.

After SCF Diaz talked to 1Lt. Peterson our Company C.O. the decision to transfer was left to me. Lieutenant Peterson said he understood the situation and would support me whatever my decision. He did not want to trade off one problem for another problem on a different site so I stayed at Tacoma Site 10 for the remainder of my second tour in S. Korea. I do not know what site I would have been assigned but think it was Highpoint Site which was between Osan and Richmond Sites.
