Tacoma Relay Station Tacoma Relay - 1969-70 55. Pheasant Hunting at Tacoma Site

We did a lot of pheasant hunting as the area was full of the game birds. One early morning SCF Diaz shot 3 of them with one shotgun blast from the barracks door. We were able to check out sporting shotguns from Special Services at K-6 Pyongtek as our shotguns used for guard duty were of no use in bird hunting. It was easy to hunt the birds and did not require SCF Diaz and me to walk a lot as we could just hunt out of the several Home Guard (National Guard) bunkers that were built around the site and countryside.

This way the pheasant would usually end up coming to us and be in range of our 12 gage shotguns. The serge and I were experienced hunters and the only guys on site to hunt before so we enjoyed getting out together. Since the Korean people were not allowed to have any firearms they did not hunt so we always shared the pheasants we bagged with the cooks and other local families. They enjoyed eating the game birds more than we did but it was special for all site personnel.

In general the only time we wore regulation uniforms was when we were having VIP's or a visitors that we didn't know. My personal uniform of the day ranged from a navy watch cap and blue cotton work shirt to Hush Puppy shoes, cut off trousers, a jungle or Marine cap and short sleeved fatigue shirt that were altered like to carry small screw drivers and a pack of cigarettes similar to the way air force tech's on base modified their shirts. We did not have to tuck in our shirt tails or "blouse" (tuck in) the bottoms of our pants as required in the Army. There were not any Army units around to enforce the dress code which was stricter than the Air Force so we got away with many things being on an isolated site and far from our headquarters.    On to Hi-Res Pic (191K)
