Richmond Relay - 1969-70
72. Our Duce and a Half Truck
A few shape turns on the rough road to Richmond Site required a 2 or 3 point turn. This is when the curve is shaper than the turning ability of the vehicle. When this occurs it is necessary for the driver to stop, back up while turning in the opposite direction then steer back into the direction of the curve as much as the vehicle can and proceed around the turn if possible. Sometime it took two tries doing this in order to complete the turn depending on the vehicle type and conditions. The road was also steep so while the driver was doing this maneuvering all he could see was sky or the cut road bank ahead of him. We set stakes along the side of the road at these sharp turns to act as guides indicating when to start or end the turning of the steering wheel and when to back up and to stop.
