A terrible tragedy fell upon the Home in 1953, when four of the boys and their housemother were killed in an automobile crash. A 27-year-old man was found guilty of five counts of misdemeanor for striking the car that led to the fatal crash. In 1960 crowds jammed the Glendora Theater to attend a sneak preview where stars appeared, in a performance that benefitted the Lark Ellen Home for Boys. About the same time a story on the home was telecast on the CBS show, "On the Go." When funds were cramped, Carl Miler, Executive Director would make a plea to the public, and individuals and organizations would always come through. Numerous organizations worked to assist the Home besides the San Gabriel Valley Auxiliary. |

Bob Bjorklund, today an inspector with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, is an alumni of Lark Ellen. "It was housemother Miss Petit who was most influential in my life," Bob said. "It was her attitude and the way in which she disciplined us." |
